A tongue-in-cheek look at getting everything you want in life or business, for free, on Facebook. I hope it makes you smile, makes a point, and at the end I share some foundational marketing principles you’ll want to make sure you’re employing in your marketing. By the way, this is NOT a slam on anyone’s event…that’s not what this post is about. Read on to see WHY I wrote this.
Another week has gone by and once again I’m amazed at the plethora of educational opportunities available to me on Facebook. Did you know everything you need to be Successful, Rich, Happy, Healthy, and Conscious is available absolutely FREE on Facebook?
Here’s a taste of the events I’ve been invited to in just the past 7 days…
Note to self: I will have to find at least 28 hours in my schedule over the next week to partake in all of this education. Doesn’t leave much time for actual work, but hey, some of the marketing copy makes it sound like I may not actually need to work to attain all my dreams and goals.
Case in point: one event even promises me, It’s Not About How Hard I Work.
This week, I can attend a telesummit and become an Ultimate Mompreneur. Hmmm, is that who I want to be? Better decide before I go.
If my business is stuck, I can Get a Business Breakthrough in 2011 and Beyond! Well, okay then, to infinity and beyond I go! (Sorry, I couldn’t help thinking of Toy Story when I read that event title). I can learn how to Go from Fearful, Scattered and Strapped to Fearless, Streamlined and Flush. Wow, didn’t even know I wanted to be all those things.
If my business is suffering from lackluster sales…
I just need to learn 5 Keys to Skyrocket My Sales and problem solved. If I’m feeling a little down in the dumps about my marketing and the number of people who know who I am, that’s easy. I can Discover My Spotlight Style for Marketing Success and Big Time Visibility. Oh, thank goodness.
If I’m feeling a little lost or disconnected, no worries.
I have The Power of Choice and Waking Up My Truest Power, or I can learn how to tap into my Personal Intuitive Guidance, and How to Celebrate My True Divine Worth. Or, I can learn how to Color My Life Happy or discover The Limitless Power of Conscious Freedom, try a little Sacred Sound Immersion, learn to focus on Big Picture Mindfulness, or even attend a Business Retreat to Sync Mind, Body, and Spirit for Success! Well why didn’t you just say so?
If I want to add a new income stream, Facebook Events have that covered.
I can go on the Real Estate Buying Bus Tour or learn how to Turn My Next Event into a Money Machine!
If I decide I’m tired of playing small, not to worry…
I can learn the 5 Mistakes that Keep Smart Women Overwhelmed and Playing Small in Business, and I can learn 3 Simple Steps to Having it All! (Good to know this one will help me do it Easily and Effortlessly…what a relief…I thought it might actually take some work!)
If my online presence isn’t attracting all the traffic I want, that’s an easy fix.
I just need to learn How to Attract More Traffic to my Website or Blog or How to Create a Successful Facebook Business Fan Page! or discover The Secret Sauce for Sizzling Website Sales (so that’s where I went wrong, it’s about the sauce!)
Because health and fitness is important to me, it’s good to know Facebook Events have me covered there, too.
I can learn How to Easily Overcome Emotional Eating, and How to Safely Detox My Body Without Pills, Drugs, or Dr. Drew! (good to know because I don’t think Celebrity Rehab is a good fit for me).
And, just to ensure I keep all of this in perspective and make sure it’s all working toward my highest good and purpose…
I can learn Big Picture Mindfulness, how to Live The Bigger Vision, how to achieve Success for the Soul in Business, and I can rest assured The Universe Has Reserved a Spot Just For Me (SO glad that seat isn’t already taken!)
Lastly, to make sure all of these dreams I’m fulfilling this week via Facebook Events are protected, there’s the Wealth Women Lawyers Workshop.
Just imagine what’s available NEXT week or what’s possible if I branch out to Twitter and Linked In!
Now, let me just say I have NOTHING against any of these programs or the people offering them.
Apparently, the people putting on all of these events felt I was the perfect attendee because they took the time to send me an invitation. Not so sure I agree with that, and that actually opens up another topic…the concept of targeted marketing and something I don’t see a lot of on Facebook.
All these events may very well be great programs.
I’m certainly NOT going to criticize programs I’m not familiar with. THAT’s not my point. My point is the amount of training and education available to us, on Facebook alone, is overwhelming. Many of the events sound great, so it’s easy to lose sight of our priorities and our business and be lured in by the promises these event names suggest.
So how do you decide what to pay attention to and what to ignore?
The key is to know WHO you are. And, to know what’s important to you, what you know, what you don’t know, so you can strategically decide what continuing education serves you best. While I could probably learn something from all of these events, it’s not necessarily going to be what I need right now to reach my goals. There are only so many hours in a day and if I’m focusing on designing a successful business that will finance the lifestyle I want, I need to be very thoughtful about how I’m spending my time.
LESS is MORE.
My advice is to choose how you spend your time wisely. Be focused and clear about what will serve you. Otherwise, you’ll end up overwhelmed, confused and unclear about WHO you are and WHAT you should actually be doing to achieve YOUR goals.
It’s easy to get caught up.
A few years ago I attended so many conferences, workshops and teleseminars because I was looking for “that missing piece.” You know the one – “If I only had it, I would finally reach ALL my goals.” (Note: there is no ONE missing piece – building a successful business is a process that involves lots of pieces!)
I ended up with so many other people’s voices in my head, I couldn’t hear my own voice. I lost my way and ran my successful 6-figure business into the ground. I had to take a sabbatical at the end of 2009 just to find myself, my confidence, and my path again. Thankfully I did and was able to quickly rebuild my business.
Yes. Learning is good. It’s necessary. But be choosy.
And, make sure you’re leaving enough time in your week to actually implement what you’re learning, because all the knowledge and education in the world doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t DO something with it.
Lastly, think about WHO you are inviting to YOUR events.
A few months ago, one of my Facebook friends sent me messages and invitations almost daily about his events to help single women meet men. This was before the redesign of Facebook profile pages and the Info Box was still featured under your Profile Picture. In my info box it clearly stated that I was happily married. My relationship status also said “married.” Needless to say, he’s no longer a Facebook friend. He may have been a nice guy with a good program but he was spamming me with all his messages and invites. A little marketing homework would have quickly told him that.
Together we can cut down on the overwhelm.
If you’re going to promote your events on Facebook, please don’t send messages inviting ALL of your friends. Segment your friends list. Only send invites to those who the event is a good fit for. That’s just good marketing. It’s called targeting and it’s the opposite of what some marketers affectionately call “shotgun marketing.” With shotgun marketing you blast your marketing out to everyone and hope it reaches someone who might be interested…NOT the way to market effectively if you hadn’t already guessed.
Another option is to post news about your event on your wall and let your friends see in it their feed. Or, create a Facebook (Fan) Page and only send relevant event invitations to people who have “liked” your page. This marketing concept is called “permission-based marketing” and it means you only send emails to people who have raised their hand and said they want to receive your news. It’s a bit of a stretch with a Facebook (Fan) Page because it really applies to email marketing, however, it can be loosely applied because your fans have “joined your tribe” on Facebook, thereby expressing interest in your business (or the content of your page). Just don’t abuse this by sending them too many messages.
If we all follow these basic, foundational marketing principles with our social media marketing, just think how much clutter we can eliminate. Who knows, if that happened I might actually start paying attention to the event invitations I receive.
I also encourage you to consider other, more targeted ways to market your services. A free teleclass marketed on Facebook might be a good tactic, but something else may be a better fit and it might actually get you better results.
That’s my two cents…what’s yours?
I’d love to hear what you think. Post a comment and share. Let’s start a conversation!
