Welcome To The Grand Illusion

For the past week I’ve been writing Chapter 5 for my book, Breaking The Spell. It’s on the topic of Social Media and “Living Out Loud.” This morning I woke up and the song “The Grand Illusion” (from 1977) by Styx popped into my mind. I haven’t thought about, or heard, this song in years! Imagine my surprise—and delight—when I looked up the lyrics and found the words below. Exactly what I’m writing about in Breaking The Spell!

Welcome to the Grand illusion
Come on in and see what’s happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show
The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star.

But don’t be fooled by the radio
The TV or the magazines
They show you photographs of how your life should be
But they’re just someone else’s fantasy
So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you never win the game
Just remember that it’s a Grand illusion
And deep inside we’re all the same.
We’re all the same…

So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because your neighbors got it made
Just remember that it’s a Grand illusion
And deep inside we’re all the same.
We’re all the same…

America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car
Someday soon we’ll stop to ponder what on Earth’s this spell we’re under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

If you don’t know the song—or you haven’t heard it in awhile—here you go… enjoy!

  1. Hey Debbie, I didn’t know this song… LOVE it! Thanks for sharing another reminder of the Grand Illusion. It’s time for a shake up… the world is oh so ready for ‘Breaking The Spell’ 🙂

  2. You’re probably too young to know that song! Glad I could introduce you to it. And thanks for your support with the book. 🙂

  3. Debbie – this is one of my favorite songs, and a favorite album. The song on the album that I would just crank up and almost blow my speakers out is “Fooling Yourself.”

This is also a case of the Grand Ilusion – others can see your greatness, most resist seeing their own greatness and we’re under the illusion that we aren’t. Guess what, we’re all part of God, that’s what we’re really made of, time to pull down the veil of illusion.

    Fooling Yourself – Styx

You see the world through your cynical eyes
You’re a troubled young man I can tell
You’ve got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand’s wet with sweat
And your head needs a rest
And you’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it
Why must you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me
And how can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb
    Such a caring young man
And you’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it
You’re killing yourself if you don’t believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You’re the one they can’t beat and you know it
Come on let’s see what you’ve got
Just take your best shot and don’t blow it.

  4. Thanks for sharing this one, too Steve. Another great song from back in the day! Who knew our favorite 70s and 80s rockers were sharing such powerful messages? I see this song in a whole new light now.
